Annual event will cook up fun
By MATTHEW KENWRIGHT
The organizers of the 10th annual Blues, BBQ & Bargains have cooked up a full schedule of events this weekend in Municipal Park and downtown Hays.
The barbecue contest, which is sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbecue Society, returns with more than 30 regional teams competing in events Friday and Saturday, said Megan Colson, executive director of the Downtown Hays Development Corp.
Children also can prepare their own meat in the KidsQ event.
"I think it just highlights another quality event that we bring to our community," she said.
"We're inviting people to just come in and enjoy the charm of Hays and all the great things we have to offer from the wonderful businesses downtown to all the volunteers who take time to be a part of it."
The Friday afternoon events start at 5 p.m., and the Saturday shopping lasts from 7 a.m. until 1 p.m.
Friday's cruise-in will display collectors' vehicles and motorcycles. A beer garden, free moon bounce and live music also will provide entertainment.
Bargains on the Bricks will be Saturday. Downtown businesses will offer discounts, and other vendors include home-based businesses and non-profits.
Some vendors will have barbecue for the public to purchase. Barbecue meals can be bought with BBQ Bucks.
The Mall's sidewalk sale will be Saturday and Sunday.
The weekend promotes the city's assets, Colson said.
