The Ellis County Sheriff's Office has made two arrests in the mail theft cases recently reported in the county.

Detective Scott Braun said a male and female were arrested at approximately 9:30 a.m. Tuesday in relation to the case.

"We're really excited to solve the case, and hopefully resolve the issue in the past with the mail thefts," Braun said.

The sheriff's office had received reports of seven mail thefts in the county as of Dec. 18. Most took place during the weekend prior to that date.

Law enforcement said they believed thieves were looking through mailboxes in rural areas of the county, apparently looking for cash in cards or envelopes.

Once they rummaged through the mail and took things to their liking, they would leave the rest scattered about.

Most of the reports at the time were east of Hays, between the city and Victoria.

Braun said names would not be released until formal charges are made. He said the investigation is ongoing.

He declined to release if the male and female were related or married.
