A 26-year-old Hays woman remained in jail Tuesday in lieu of $100,000 bond in connection with a suspected case of child abuse involving a 2-year-old child.
The woman was identified as Jody M. Brooks by Hays Police Chief Don Scheibler. Formal charges have not yet been filed, he said.
The case first was brought to the attention of police at approximately 3:45 p.m. Monday, when they were contacted by personnel in the emergency room at Hays Medical Center.
The child was being treated for another injury when emergency room personnel noticed bruises and then contacted police. Investigators determined the bruises were consistent with child abuse and made the arrest.
While few details about the child and the nature of the injuries are being released, Scheibler and Detective Dave Bunger said Brooks would be considered a friend of the family and also a caretaker of the child.
"I would say that's correct," Bunger said of the caretaker relationship between Brooks and the child.
The injury precipitating the emergency room visit isn't believed to be related to the bruising that prompted the call to police.
Scheibler said the investigation is ongoing, and HPD is being assisted by the Department of Child and Family Services, juvenile intake and the Ellis County Attorney's office.
