Commissioners hear about water violation

A minor drinking water violation was reported to Hays city commissioners Thursday during their work session.

Bernie Kitten, Hays director of utilities, said the city had a monthly violation for coliform bacteria detected Aug. 5. Two more instances were discovered after additional testing. The water was safe to drink.

The violation is important because it can reflect more serious problems. However, no fecal coliform or E. coli were detected in the tests. Warmer water and not flushing water mains might have caused the issue.

City staff has not flushed the lines as often because of public perception during water conservation, said Toby Dougherty, Hays city manager. The maintenance will be resumed to ensure health and safety.

The violation will be published before Sept. 12 in The Hays Daily News.
