Ellinwood woman killed in Thomas County accident


COLBY -- An Ellinwood woman was killed Sunday afternoon when the driver of a car she was riding in fell asleep.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, Marvin L. Dewey, 60, Sioux Falls, S.D., was southbound on Kansas Highway 25 approximately 6 miles north of Interstate 70 at 3:25 p.m. when he fell asleep. The car drifted into the east ditch, where it hit a field access road. The vehicle rolled an unknown number of times, coming to rest on its wheels, according to the KHP report.

Betty J. Dewey, 89, Ellinwood, was taken to Citizens Medical Center, Colby, and later pronounced dead. Another passenger, Rachel C. Dewey, 23, Sioux Falls, also was taken to Citizens Medical Center and later flown to Swedish Hospital, Denver.

The driver was not injured, according to the report. All were wearing seat belts.
