Students from seven public schools and two Catholic schools in Ellis County will join a home-schooled student in competing for top honors at Friday's annual Famous Figures competition at Beach/Schmidt Performing Arts Center in Sheridan Hall at Fort Hays State University.

A scoring system with points from three different judges is used to determine the top five finishers, who also will get the opportunity to perform in front of Hays Rotary Club members May 12.

The event, sponsored by the Hays Arts Council, is in its 19th year.

Thirty-three students qualified out of their individual schools this year by researching the life of a famous figure of their choice. Schools are allowed two contestants per number of fifth-grade classrooms in their school to advance to the county finals.

Friday's competition will begins at 8:30 a.m. and will feature a new famous figure on stage every five minutes; the awards ceremony is set for 11:35. The public is welcome to attend.
