House fire sends family to hospital
By The Hays Daily News
An early morning fire in Hays sent family members to Hays Medical Center with possible injuries.
At approximately 3:37 a.m. today, the Hays Fire Department was called to a house fire at 3502 Fairway Drive. The first firefighters arrived seven minutes later and found a fire in an attached garage of the large, single-family dwelling. The fire spread to the attic and the living areas. A vehicle also was on fire in the driveway, and wind fanning the flames threatened nearby areas.
The occupants of the house were awakened by a smoke alarm and were able to escape before firefighters arrived. They were taken to HaysMed by the Ellis County EMS.
A total of 22 Hays firefighters and five trucks responded. Four Ellis County Rural firefighters also helped.
The building suffered heavy damage, according to a report from the city of Hays.
The most probable cause of the fire has not been determined. A team of investigators from the Hays Police Department, Hays Fire Department and the Kansas State Fire Marshal's Office are working to determine the cause.
