Job fair Tuesday in Hays at mall
By RANDY GONZALES
The Manufacturers' Job Fair is scheduled from 3 to 6 p.m. Tuesday at The Mall, 2918 Vine.
Ellis County Coalition for Economic Development will host the job fair, said Executive Director Aaron White. The companies at the job fair will not share in the costs. Approximately 20 companies have received invitations, White said, adding it's likely not all will attend. Companies on the invitation list include Hess Services, Wheelchairs of Kansas, Glassman Corp., RANS, APAC and EnerSys.
"They're all coming in with jobs, ready to hire," White said of those companies attending.
Experience is not necessary.
"Most of these companies now are starting to look at folks not necessarily who have the welding experience, or have that type of experience, but someone who's willing to work hard and come every day willing to learn a trade," White said. "They will train them on the job."
In a news release, White said Workforce Investment Act funding can offset a company's training costs up to $3,000 per worker. He added a recent study in the nine-county area showed a significant number of people willing to change careers for higher-paying jobs.
With unemployment in Ellis County at 2.4 percent, White said in the release he was counting on those workers willing to change careers to help the manufacturing labor shortage.
White said the manufacturing jobs are higher-paying than those in the service and retail sector, and the job fair provides an opportunity to find an employer that would provide on-the-job training and advancement.
"This is a great opportunity to sit in front of some of those manufacturers and see if there's a fit," White said.
There still will be a career fair in April, White said.
