RUSSELL -- There will be double the fun and activities this year at Freedom Fest and Russell Oil Days, schedule for July 4 to 6.

The two celebrations joined forces earlier this year, said Micky Johnson, co-chairwoman of Freedom Fest.

The Russell Chamber of Commerce has sponsored a Freedom Fireworks display for a number of years, but was considering canceling the event two years ago.

Traci Wieger, an active community volunteer, came to Johnson and asked her to help lead a committee to organize the event.

"I'm a Navy vet, and I didn't want to see it go away," Johnson said. "It brings people to town."

Activities kick off at 8 a.m. July 4 with the Dirty Dynamite Dash at LaSada, south of Russell.

The dash is a 2-mile walk or run with obstacles; participants can go their own pace, but should expect to get dirty. Besides area participants, entries have been received from Oklahoma, Texas and Nebraska, Johnson said.

There will be a 1-mile dash following the Dirty Dash for children 11 and younger. The dash is free, but there is a $10 charge for a T-shirt. Participants should enter by June 27.

Other events during the day include helicopter rides, games, barbecue, a shooting event at LaSada and a patriotic program at the VFW.

There's also a concert and fireworks display in the evening if conditions allow.

Other weekend activities include a golf tournament, remote control car race, parade and oilfield olympics.
