Police set to take back Rx drugs
The Ellis County Drug Enforcement Unit will be taking back unwanted prescription drugs at a weekend event.
In what is the seventh opportunity in three years, the DEU will accept the unwanted drugs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday in the parking lot of the Ellis County Law Enforcement Center, 105 W. 12th.
In addition to the Ellis County program, drug drop-off points are planned at sheriff's offices in Thomas, Norton, Phillips and Trego counties.
The idea behind the drug turn-in program is to provide a chance for residents to properly dispose of the drugs, rather than flush then down the toilet or throw them in the trash, practices that pose safety and health hazards.
In the six previous take-back events across the nation, more than 2.8 million pounds of pills have been turned in. In April, more than 371 tons were surrendered at the 5,800 sites in operation nationally.
