Teen killed in Tuesday morning accident
PLAINVILLE -- A Zurich teenager was killed in a two-vehicle accident on his way to football practice Tuesday morning.
Acetin M. Benedick, 16, a would-be junior at Plainville High School, was eastbound on Kansas Highway 18 at 5:25 a.m. approximately 3 miles west of Plainville when his vehicle crossed the center line, went into the north ditch, overcorrected and struck an oncoming vehicle head-on. Both vehicles came to rest in the south ditch, according to a Kansas Highway Patrol report.
Benedick was taken to Rooks County Health Center, Plainville, then flown to Wesley Medical Center, Wichita, where he died. He was wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP report.
Benedick attended Plainville schools until fifth grade and just transferred back to start his junior year, according to a staff member at the high school. Counselors will be available for students and staff when school begins in Plainville USD 270 on Wednesday.
The driver of the other vehicle, Kelly G. Shearer, 47, Almena, and his passenger, Ricci L. Gutzman, 56, Bennington, were taken to Rooks County Health Center with injuries. Shearer was wearing a seat belt; Gutzman was not.
