Teachers, USD 489 negotiate schedules

Scheduling remains a sore spot for Hays High School teachers.

The schedule was discussed when the Hays USD 489 negotiating team and Hays-NEA bargaining team met Thursday afternoon.

Until this school year, Hays High classes met less often and for longer periods in a block schedule.

The 2012-13 contract required HHS teachers to teach six classes rather than the previous five classes.

The change was for budget issues in long-term planning, restructuring and flexibility in the movement of teachers, according to the USD 489 negotiating team.

A Hays High committee came up with a modified block schedule for the current year, but teachers want to return to the previous schedule.

To illustrate her request, Kathy Wagoner, Hays High teacher and bargaining unit co-chairwoman, gave a presentation on students' achievements while the school was on the block schedule.

"That's a terrific plan, (but) we just can't afford that," Superintendent Will Roth said of the block schedule.

The group also discussed adding HHS events supervisors for fall, winter and spring events.

"They will be short one administrator at the high school next year," Roth said.

Mike Hester, HHS principal, is retiring at the end of the year. Marty Straub, HHS assistant principal, is Hester's replacement. Straub's position won't be filled next year.

"We physically will not be able to cover all events unless we have something like this," Straub said.

The next meeting is 4 p.m. June 12 in the Toepfer Board Room at Rockwell Administration Center, 323 W. 12th.

Any final contract must be approved by the board of education and ratified by USD 489 certified staff.
