Those wanting to watch the annual spring play at Thomas More Prep-Marian Junior-Senior High School in Hays will have more choices of days this year.

TMP will feature four performances of "The Crucible" at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and May 11, as well as a 2 p.m. matinee May 12, at the TMP Auditorium. Tickets are $7 per person and can be purchased either at the door or by calling the school beforehand at (785) 625-6577.

The play director, Travis Grizzell, decided to add another performance from the usual three-day event because of a large amount of students who tried out for female parts.

"So I decided to try to do something different," Grizzell said, explaining, "we double cast them, with Cast A going two nights and Cast B, 2 nights."

Grizzell often has used younger actors or actresses to fill in for him in plays and musicals.

This year's three non-high school students are official members of the school, as students in the newly formed junior high school at TMP.

"They were in the fall musical, and I look forward to having them for several years; they're good," Grizzell said of eight-graders Matthew Moeder and Mark Loftus and seventh-grader Trae Megaffin.

The two main male and female parts are played by sophomore Matt Mindrup and senior Emily Leiker, respectively, as husband and wife John and Elizabeth Proctor.

"The Crucible" is a serious play from the 1950s, a dramatization of the Salem witch trials that took place in the Province of Massachusetts Bay in the late 1600s.

"We do so many comedies," Grizzell said, "so I wanted to do something a little different this year -- something more well known with a little depth to it.

"The students like comedies," he added, "and this was a little daunting at first. But I think they are really getting to like this. They're looking forward to it."
