TMP chess teams both runners-up in weekend tournament

Both teams finished second, edged out of first place by slim margins in both the senior and junior high competitions.

But the Thomas More Prep-Marian Junior-Senior High School chess teams still brought home a championship from Saturday's chess tournament at Onaga.

Sophomore Patrick Kepka won five of six games to claim the individual gold medal in the senior high division, and senior teammate Jacob Brull also won five games to place fourth in leading the Monarchs to their runner-up team finish.

TMP and Blue Valley of Overland Park each scored 17 points, but Blue Valley won the first-place trophy on the tiebreaker method using opponents' total number of victories.

It was the first time in four tournaments this season TMP did not bring home the championship trophy; nonetheless, Coach Randy Brull said it was invaluable experience because this tournament was his team's toughest competition to date.

TMP's junior high team scored 14.5 points, just a half point behind Washburn Middle School of Topeka. The younger Monarchs were led by seventh-graders Sheldon Weber and Paul Brull, who each scored four points to finish 7-8 at the junior high level.

Other top 10 finishers for TMP were sophomore Justyce Briney, eighth with four points in the senior high division, and eighth-grader Alex Lenser, 10th in junior high with 3.5 points.

Fundraiser for band program

Tickets now are on sale for a fundraiser for the band program at TMP.

Anthony & The Anamals will play from 8:30 to 11:30 p.m. Jan. 31 in the former Kennedy Middle School gym, with proceeds going to the Monarch junior and senior high bands.

Tickets are $15 per person -- must be 21 years old to attend -- and can be purchased by calling the school at (785) 625-6577 or Kathy Dreiling Amrein, director of bands at TMP, at (785) 650-4371.

Set-ups will be provided, and there will be a sandwich luncheon at the conclusion of the dance. There will be a guest appearance from Jim Schmidtberger, lead singer for Jimmy Dee and the Fabulous Destinations. All three members of Anthony & the Anamals -- Tony and Tim Pfeifer and Ray Schmidtberger -- also play in the Jimmy Dee band.
