Scrapbookers revive crafty weekend retreat
By ELIZABETH GOLDEN
RUSSELL -- Scrapbookers will be preserving memories Feb. 28 at the annual Scraphappy Retreat.
The retreat originally was orchestrated by a group of scrapbookers called Happy Scrappers and then was continued by a scrapbooking store in Russell called Scrappydays.
After a two-year hiatus, Jessica Mai, Hays, decided to organize another retreat.
"I had gone to the other retreats," she said. "I got together with two other women, and we decided to do it again."
Mai is a scrapbooker.
"I probably just got involved by having children, family," she said. "I have lots of photos, and this is a good way to preserve those memories."
The retreat will take place Feb. 28 to March 2 in Russell. The festivities will begin with each person receiving a 6-foot table dedicated to his or her craft.
"The retreat is supposed to be focused on scrapbookers," Mai said. "But we get people who do other crafts."
Mai said everyone will have the opportunity to work on his or her craft whenever they like.
"They can do whatever they want," she said. "They can leave their stuff set up, then come back, work on crafts, go swimming, exercise. Just take a break whenever they need to."
Food also will be provided.
"We're having lunch and supper catered," Mai said. "We're also having a sweet buffet Saturday night."
The sweet buffet will include chocolate, cheesecake and brownies.
Guests also have the opportunity to receive massages, visit with vendors and take pictures in the photo booth.
"It's just a weekend to catch up with scrapbooking," Mai said, "get together with some girlfriends and have a good weekend."
More than 30 people are registered, coming from surrounding areas as well as locations in Nebraska and Colorado. The ages range is from mid-20s to those in retirement.
"We see a lot of response from anyone who has a family," Mai said. "It's hard for working mothers to do scrapbooking crafts, so this is a good way for them to get away and get more done."
The registration deadline is Friday. For more information, contact Mai at firstname.lastname@example.org.
