Kansas Advocates for Better Care recently released its list of the highest performing assisted-living facilities in Kansas, and Sterling House of Hays was on the list.

The KABC ranked 318 assisted-living facilities in Kansas that are not attached to a nursing home, and named 51 deficiency-free facilities.

The surveys are conducted by inspectors with the Kansas Department of Aging and Disability Services. The facility must be deficiency-free for three or more surveys.

Sterling House has been deficiency-free for three years based on reviews of medical charts, health reviews, employee background checks and the evaluation of the community as a whole.

"It's really important for families to ask the tough questions when looking for a community," said Katie Gleichman, former sales and marketing manager at Sterling House. "It's important to ask, 'What were your last state survey results?' You want to make sure to look at the research to make the best decision."

Sterling House is the only facility in Ellis County to receive the award.

"We really pride ourselves on having associates that are here for more than a paycheck," Gleichman said. "They are all here because they love their jobs. It really shows in the care they give and the overall wellness of the community.

The facility contains 33 apartments and handles a wide variety of care needs.

"We do personalized senior living," Gleichman said. "Each person has his or her each individual cares. It's personalized assisted-living for each individual person."
