GORHAM -- The Gorham Community Development Association is gearing up for its fifth annual 5K run/walk and street dance Saturday.

All proceeds from the event benefit the Gorham City Park project. Each year, the funds raised are used to purchase a new piece of park equipment.

"The park is at the center of Gorham," Stoffel said. "We want the center to be the hub of our thriving community. So we thought if we could fix up the center, it will catch your eye when driving through."

The fundraiser has helped purchase a new play area for children younger than 5, a new swing set with a handicap swing, a merry-go-round and park benches. In addition, the basketball and tennis courts have been renovated.

"The equipment was really getting old," said Michelle Corley, 5K organizer.

This year, the GCDA will vote on what to renovate next. Stoffel said the city has discussed adding a larger picnic shelter, walking track, restrooms or play area.

The 5K will take place in the morning, followed by the street dance in the evening. Barbecue will be served, and three bands will play. Registration for the 5K will begin at 6:45 a.m. at Gorham City Park on Market Street. The walk/run will begin at 8 a.m.

The street dance will be from 6 p.m. to midnight Saturday at the park. The entry feel is $5 and free for children younger than 10. Barbecue will be served at 6 p.m. for $6 per plate. Children younger than 5 are free.
