Hays High crowns two kings

4/8/2013

Because of a tie in voting, two kings rather than one were honored at Saturday's 2013 Hays High School prom.

Seniors Dustin Mulkey and Blake Ruder both were announced as prom kings, and classmate Millie Cooper was crowned queen at Fort Hays State University's Memorial Union.

"We were surprised (about the tie)," said Tammy Stewart, registrar at Hays High who helps coordinate prom activities with Julie Pfannenstiel, the nurse's secretary at HHS. "We thought, 'What are we going to do? We only have one scepter.' "

Stewart has worked at Hays High since 1999 and can't remember a tie for king or queen, whether it be homecoming, Indian Call (the mid-winter dance) or prom. Prom royalty is chosen by teachers, and the junior and senior classes then vote for king and queen.

There are approximately 370 students in those two classes, so a tie is unlikely.

"We ordered another (scepter) right away when we found out about the tie Friday and borrowed one (from another organization in school) for that night," Stewart said. "Very unusual."
