Annual trail ride trots with horses and wagons
RUSSELL SPRINGS -- The 48th annual Butterfield Trail Ride is this weekend in Russell Springs.
Participants will ride horses, wagons or walk a portion of the Butterfield Trail along the scenic Smoky Hill River in Logan County.
The ride begins at 1 p.m. Saturday, with a 10- to 12-mile ride along a section of the trail, looping back to Russell Springs.
A shorter ride is scheduled to start at 9 a.m. Sunday, followed by a ranch rodeo presented by the Butterfield Trail Riders. Outdoor church services will be at 8 a.m.
While stallions aren't allowed on the ride, anyone can bring a horse or catch a ride on one of the wagons. Camping space is available at the park in Russell Springs.
The ride is free, but donations are accepted on behalf of the Butterfield Trail Museum and Historical Association.
