Downed tree hits church grotto
By The Hays Daily News
One of the oldest trees in the yard of St. Joseph Church in Hays was destroyed in Wednesday's overnight thunderstorm.
High winds are believed to be the cause of the large hackberry tree snapping at the trunk and falling onto the nearby grotto, which highlights the side yard of the Catholic church at 215 West 13th.
The parish's maintenance crew was busy early this morning using chainsaws to cut up the branches and lift them off the grotto.
David Kruse said the grotto sustained no damage as far as he could tell.
