Pair jailed on drug allegations

WaKEENEY -- Two WaKeeney residents remained in the Trego County jail Tuesday awaiting a bond hearing in connection with a series of drug-related charges.
James Smith, 58, and Barbara Farber, 50, both of WaKeeney, were arrested Saturday following the execution of a search warrant at their WaKeeney residence, according to WaKeeney Police Chief Terry Eberle.
The arrests were the culmination of an ongoing investigation into drug-related activities, he said, and led to the recovery of marijuana plants being grown with the aid of artificial lights in the basement of the couple's residence.
While formal charges have not yet been filed, they were arrested on possession of marijuana, possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia and conspiracy.
Eberle said they still were being held in the Trego County jail Tuesday, waiting to appear before a judge so bond could be set. He expected that hearing to take place sometime today.
