Mariel revisited

Mariel revisited

Many of you do not remember the Mariel boatlift. In 1980, then President Jimmy Carter reached an agreement with Cuban Dictator Fidel Castro to permit Cuban nationals to immigrate to the United States.

As a result of this agreement, more than 125,000 Cuban nationals were permitted to move into our country.

Included in this exodus from Cuba were hundreds of hardened criminals and individuals with serious mental conditions that Castro remarked permitted him to "Flush our system." Crime rates increased, and thousands were remanded to our various prison systems.

Under the auspices of the current administration, our federal government once again has introduced thousands of hardened criminals into society -- 36,000 murders, rapists, drug dealers and thieves. Although several thousand of the 125,000 Cubans who were received in our country were criminals, a small percentage, most were law abiding and integrated into our society. However, the most recent decision mandated by our Department of Justice with presidential concurrence ensures 100 percent of the 36,000 convicted felons released from our prison system are free to resume their previous criminal activities.

Again, our justice system has failed the American people.

Are we doomed to repeat history?
