URSS Rebels return to DCRP on Saturday night

By the URSS

OBERLIN, Kan. -- The United Rebel Sprint Series has a storied history at Dodge City Raceway Park.

Richie Dewell hopes he's able to add his name to the long list of drivers who have won on the 3/8-mile dirt oval after Saturday night. Dewell hasn't had a lot of seat time the last few years, so the early portion of this season has seen him getting readjusted to the car. Still, he is hoping for great things as the Rebels try to tame the track at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

"It's kind of what I call my hometown track," said Dewell, from Fowler. Dewell is coming off a pair of solid outings last weekend. He was eighth at Oberlin and sixth at Lexington, Neb., in a heavily contested field of drivers. "Being two years off and getting going again, there's some new stuff we're trying," Dewell said. "We're in the trial-and-error stage. But I'm happy with the way the weekend went."

Dewell is in search of his first URSS career victory, and he'd like nothing more than for that to happen Saturday night. "That would be great," he said. "But we're hoping for a top-five, to be honest. That's our goal while we try to learn about the new stuff."

DCRP has hosted the Rebels several times since 2006. In fact, in 28 URSS events at the track, there have been 15 different winners reach victory lane. The track is a fast, 3/8-mile oval, but the unique aspect of it is a wall that runs all the way around the outside of the track.

"In Dodge, it changes so much," Dewell said about the track. "There's dry spots here and there, and you never know when they will change or where they will be. ... That makes it a new challenge every time out."

More URSS drivers will be in action Saturday at Elmwood Park Speedway in Norton as the URSS-sanctioned Heartland Sprint Series hits the 1/2-mile track. It will be the fourth HSS event this season. Darren Berry, Luke Cranston and Jeff Radcliffe all have claimed wins this year.
