SALINA, Kan. -- When the Salina Speedway re-opened a new tradition was started on Independence Day weekend. That tradition involved something a little different for fans and race teams, a topless event.
For the third straight year the Belleville Motorsports IMCA Modifieds and Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Northern SportMods will shed their roofs and sail panels for a chance to win increased money with a larger than normal purse. This gives the fans a chance to see the drivers in action without a roof and gives the drivers a little air conditioning in the hot Kansas summer!
This year's Topless Challenge is being presented by Wholesale Fireworks of Salina, located at the corner of Magnolia and Markley, South Old Highway 81, and 151 East Avenue B.
The IMCA Modifieds will race for $1,000 to win. The event will award track, state, regional, and national IMCA points, as well as awarding the winner with an entry on the FastShafts Invitational Race ballot. Darrick Klima won the inaugural event while Brian Knoell captured victory last year. The division will have a $25 entry fee, and if a 30 or more car field is reached the purse will get an added bonus as per the payout on the website.
The IMCA Northern SportMods will race for $500 to win in their second race during the Challenge. Last year Dan Smith picked up the win in the division. The drivers will have a $10 entry fee into this year's contest.
The Auto House Mod Lite division also has the option to shed their roofs as well and will be in action for the first time since June 14.
The Budweiser IMCA Hobby Stocks and T&R Dirt Construction Mini Stocks will also be on the card for the evening.
Hot laps are set for 7:00PM with opening ceremonies and racing to follow.
Adults are $10 while kids 17 & under are FREE. A $2.00 discount is also available for seniors over 55 and military with ID. Pit passes are $25.
