LIBERAL — The Hays High School volleyball team saw its season come to an end Saturday in the first round of the Class 5A sub-state in Liberal. The Indians fell to host Liberal, 25-18, 25-23 to end their season at 12-23 under second-year head coach Christin Nunnery.
Liberal (22-17) went on to fall to top-seeded Great Bend, 25-16, 25-20, and the Panthers advanced to the 5A state tournament with a win and improved to 29-9.
Class 4A Division II
At Colby, Goodland upended the host Eagles, 25-22, 25-27, 25-18 in the championship match to punch the Cowgirls’ ticket to Salina and the Division II state tourney. Goodland, the top seed, knocked off Scott City, 25-18, 25-17 in the first round and Colby defeated No. 2 seed Hugoton, 23-25, 25-22, 25-22 to advance to the semifinals.
Colby finished its season at 19-18. Goodland is 29-7 entering this week’s finale.
At Cimarron, the Thomas More Prep-Marian volleyball team lost to top-seeded Hoisington in the first round, 25-19, 25-9. TMP-Marian ended its season at 6-27.
Hoisington then went on to defeat Phillipsburg, 25-23, 32-30 in the semfinals and won the sub-state with a 25-20, 25-20 win against Holcomb. Phillipsburg, the No. 4 seed, defeated fifth-seeded Lakin in the first round, 32-30, 25-15.
Phillispburg ended its season at 29-9 in the semifinal loss. Norton fell 25-18, 25-19 in the first round to host Cimarron to end its season at 16-18.
Top-seeded Smith Center won a pair of close sets against Ellis to advance to the 2A state finale in Emporia. The Lady Red won 25-23, 25-23 after knocking off Ness City, 25-16, 25-15 in the semifinals.
The sub-state title run also included a 25-9, 25-16 win against the host Ringnecks in the first round. Ellis made the title round by wins against WaKeeney-Trego (22-25, 25-23, 25-7) and Oberlin (25-12, 25-20).
The Railers ended their season at 25-13. Smith Center enters the state finale with a 36-4 mark.
Class 1A Division I
La Crosse earned a state berth to Hays with a 16-20 mark after beating Macksville in the sub-state title match at Lincoln. La Crosse won, 16-25, 25-16, 25-17 after knocking off second-seeded Lincoln in the semifinals, 25-14, 25-11.
Top-seeded Victoria was upset in the semifinals by Macksville, 25-15, 25-16. Victoria ended its season at 15-12.
Hoxie rolled past the competition in its own sub-state. After a first-round bye, the top seed Indians beat St. Francis 25-22, 25-8, then
Stockton, 25-17, 25-21 to advance to the state tourney in Hays with a 35-3 mark. Stockton, the No. 3 seed beat Thunder Ridge in the semifinals, 25-22, 26-24 to advance to the sub-state title match.
The only first-round match saw St. Francis beat Quinter, 20-25, 25-10, 25-17.
Class 1A Division II
At Sharon Springs, the host Wallace County Wildcats punched their ticket to the state tourney in Hays by beating Golden Plains in the sub-state title match, 25-21, 25-22.
The Wildcats enter state with a 34-4 record, defeating Wheatland-Grinnell as well in the semifinals, 24-26, 25-23, 25-15. Golden Plains topped Triplains-Brewster, 25-10, 25-10 in the other semifinal.
In the Ransom sub-state, Dighton earned a spot at state with a 25-25, 25-23 win against Otis-Bison to move to 27-12. Dighton, the top seed, beat Pawnee Heights in the semifinals. Otis-Bison, the No. 3 seed, beat the host Western Plains Bobcats, 25-18, 25-14 in the other semifinal.
