Despite being outhit 13-7, the Hays Eagles Legion baseball team rallied to win in dramatic fashion Sunday evening, claiming an undefeated championship in the Wild West Festival Tournament at Larks Park.
Trailing 6-3 entering the bottom of the seventh inning against Paola in the championship game, Hays (23-6) scored four runs and won the game in walk-off fashion.
Layne Downing tripled in a pair of runs with no outs, then Jake Sedbrook drove in two more with a walk-off double that secured the Eagles' ninth straight victory, and fifth in the tournament.
Earlier in the day, Hays defeated the Midwest Bruins, 8-3, in the tourney semifinals at HHS Field.
Brady Bieker picked up his second win of the tournament by pitching two innings of relief of starter Marcus Altman in the title game.
Altman worked through five innings and gave up five runs (two earned) on 10 hits as the Eagles committed three errors. Bieker gave up one earned run on three hits with two strikeouts and two walks. He moved to 4-1 in his team-high 10th appearance.
Sedbrook's game-winner was his third hit of the game -- the only multi-hit game for the Eagles, who had seven. Paola took a 5-2 lead after the fourth inning. In the seventh, Connor Rule led off with a single, and Kade Parker reached on an error by the Paola third baseman, and both runners advanced on the error. Then, Downing tripled for the first time this season to start the rally. After Altman reached base, and stole second, Sedbrook doubled in Downing and Altman to end the game.
Against Midwest in the semifinals, Cole Schumacher pitched a complete game to move to 6-0. He gave up three runs (all earned) on three hits with no strikeouts and five walks. The Eagles collected five base hits, four coming from Zack Legleiter and Kade Parker combined. Parker and Legleiter each drove in a pair of runs.
The other hit went to Layne Downing. Kaden Rohr, Altman, Trenton Henningsen and Sedbrook each recorded RBIs in the game.
The Eagles are off until Wednesday when they travel to Kansas City for another wood-bat tournament. Next home action is scheduled for July 15 against Salina at Larks Park.
