PITTSBURG -- The Hays Eagles Senior Legion baseball team won its second game of the Class AAA state tournament on Thursday, defeating Newton 4-2 to advance in the winner's bracket of the double elimination tournament.

Kade Parker (5-3), a Barton Community College signee, earned the win for Hays. He pitched the full nine innings, allowed 10 hits and two earned runs with six strikeouts.

Hays scored its first run in the bottom of the first inning, an unearned run by Cole Schumacher. The Eagles held on to their 1-0 lead until Newton tied the game in the top of the fourth inning on a solo home run. Hays answered with single runs in both the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings to take a 3-1 lead.

Newton cut the score to 3-2 with an RBI-single in the top of the sixth inning, only to have Hays get the run back in the bottom of the eighth inning on a RBI-single by Marcus Altman.

Altman finished 2 for 4 with one RBI and Schumacher went 2 for 2 with one run.

The Eagles will continue play today at 5 p.m. against host Pittsburg, which defeated Emporia 14-3 on Thursday. The winner will advance to the championship game and await its opponent out of the loser's bracket.
