LIBERAL -- The Hays High School baseball team is going to hold on to the throne for at least one more season.

The Indians defeated Liberal High School 4-3 on Tuesday in Game 1 of a doubleheader, enough to clinch their fourth consecutive Western Athletic Conference crown.

Hays High lost 3-2 in Game 2 to finish the regular season 13-7, 6-2 in WAC play.

Senior Layne Downing earned the win in Game 1 for the Indians. He pitched six innings, giving up seven hits and one earned run, and struck out eight batters.

Hays High trailed 3-1 entering the sixth inning in Game 1, but scored three runs on three hits to take a one-run lead. Liberal did not record a hit over the final two innings, with Cole Schumacher finishing the game on the mound for his first save of the season.

Downing led the Indians with two RBI, both coming on sacrifice flies.

Hays High led 2-0 after three and a half innings in Game 2, but an RBI triple by Liberal led to the team's first run and a throwing error by the Indians led to the second, unearned run.

They would take the 2-2 score into the seventh and final inning, where Hays High went down in order. Liberal opened the bottom of the inning with a triple, the game-winning run being scored at the next at-bat on a sac-fly to right field.

Senior Kade Parker pitched the complete for Hays High, getting the loss.

Parker gave up seven hits and two earned runs while striking out six batters. He also led the offense, going 2 for 3 with an RBI.

The Indians will wait on regional announcements, expected later this week.
