HHS softball makes short work of Larned

LARNED -- The Hays High School softball team made easy work of Larned High School on Thursday, earning the sweep with wins of 7-1 and 21-8.
In Game 1, Hays High sprinkled in runs throughout the first six innings and took a 4-0 lead into the seventh. Then came three more runs in the top portion of the inning, with Larned's only run coming in the bottom half of the seventh.
Junior Hannah Hearld got the win for Hays High in five innings pitched, giving up only one hit, no runs and striking out 10 batters.
Sophomore Tessa Stickel and junior Kaylie Schoendaller each recorded two RBI for Hays High, which outhit Larned 12-2.
Game 2 was one for the offense, with 36 combined hits and 29 runs between the teams. Hays High scored 10 runs in the top of the first inning and held a 12-6 lead after only two innings. The Indians added three runs in the fifth, one in the sixth, and five in the seventh to eventually get to 21 for the game.
Hays High outhit Larned 27-9 in Game 2.
Hearld once again got the win in the circle, striking out 11 and giving up only one earned run in five innings. She also led the offense, going 5-for-5 at the plate with three runs and five RBI. Schoendaller was second on the team with four RBI, going 4-for-5 with two runs.
Hays High (11-1) will play a doubleheader at Great Bend today at 4 p.m., a makeup from Tuesday's game that was postponed because of weather.
