The Hays Larks opened the 2014 summer with a doubleheader sweep Saturday of the Colorado Sox at Larks Park.

Hays (2-0) won 4-0 in the opener, then pushed a run across in the 11th inning for a 4-3 win in the nightcap.

The two teams wrap a 3-game series with a 7 p.m. 7-inning game today at Larks Park, where the team will honor city and county officials.

Returner Nick Goza pitched four innings of the opener for the win for Hays. He gave up just two hits with two strikeouts and a walk, while newcomer Alex Daniele pitched the final three innings for the save.

Michael Burns finished 2 for 3 with a double in the leadoff spot for the Larks, and scored one run, and drove one in. Derek Birginkse was 2 for 3 with an RBI and a double, while Cooper Langley was 1 for 2 with a run scored. Kevin Czarnecki walked twice and scored two runs.

In the nightcap, Colorado took a 3-0 lead after the first inning against Larks starter David Koll, but Hays rallied in the sixth inning to tie the game after a two-RBI double by Birginski. Clayton Garland drove in the Larks’ first run of the game, scoring Nate Olinger, who singled to lead off the inning.

The teams exchanged several base runners through the next four innings, before the Larks Evan Gruener doubled with one out in the 11th inning before Czarnecki reached on a fielder’s choice bunt and drove in the winning run in Gruener.

Olinger, a utility player from Colorado School of Mines, started at first, but pitched three innings of relief for the win. He gave up no runs with three strikeouts and a walk. Connor Stolander and DJ Carr also saw time on the mound.

Garland, last summer’s Jayhawk League Player of the Year, finished 2 for 5 with a run scored and an RBI for the Larks. Gruener and Langley each had two hits.

Hays plays at home today, then hosts Newton in a 7 p.m. game Tuesday before beginning Jayhawk League play on the road Wednesday at Dodge City.
