Larks fall in Game 2 to Wellington
By The Hays Daily News
The Hays Larks fell just shy in Game 2 against the Wellington Heat on Saturday night at Larks Park.
Wellington jumped out to a 3-0 lead after its half of the third inning, then held off the Larks the rest of the way, claiming its fifth straight win over the Larks in Hays, dating back to last season.
The Larks (9-3 overall, 6-3 Jayhawk League) scored their two runs in the bottom of the third on a two-RBI double by Aaron Cornell, who joined the team Friday. The hit was one of six collected by Hays. Wellington, which moved to 13-0, 7-0 in Jayhawk League play, had five hits and scored an unearned run in the third inning against Hays starter Nick Goza. Goza lasted five innings. He gave up two earned runs on five hits with four strikeouts and two walks in taking his first loss of the season.
Cornell was 1 for 4, while Michael Burns, Tanner DeVinny, Ty Leffler, Evan Gruener and Nate Olinger each added a hit. The Larks left the tying run at third base against Wellington’s fourth pitcher of the game.
The two teams wrap up the series with a 7 p.m. game today, part of Little League Night at Larks Park, where area little league players will be introduced.
