Monarchs sweep Colby

COLBY -- The Hays Monarchs picked up a doubleheader sweep of Colby on Wednesday night.
Hays held off a Colby rally to win 10-7 in the opener, then won 12-3 in five innings in the nightcap to improve to 7-5 for the summer.
In the first game, Hays had a 10-2 lead heading to the bottom of the sixth, but the Monarchs allowed three runs in the sixth and two in the fifth, but held off the surge. Starter Jordan Gottschalk got the win in five innings. He gave up two runs on four hits with four walks and two strikeouts. Grant Romme gave up the five runs in in the sixth and didnt' record an out before leaving in the seventh. Shane Zimmerman finsihed the game.
The Monarchs scored in all but the seventh inning, potsing four runs in the third and two in the fifth.
Gottschalk (1-0) and Braiden Werth each had three hits, while Gottschalk, Cameron Brin and Pierce Schippers each drove in two runs. Brin and Werth each had a double, while Gottschalk added a triple.
In the nightcap, Hays scored eight runs in the first inning, then four in the fifth to set the run-rule in a win for Brin (2-1). Brin pitched 4.1 innings and gave up three earned runs on four hits with five walks and three strikeouts. Werth pitched the final two thirds on an inning.
Brin collected two doubles offesnively and drove in a run. he finished 2 for 3 with three runs scored. Zimmerman finished 2 for 4 with a run scored and an RBI.
The Monarhcs will take on the Hays Eagles in a 6 p.m. doubleheader Friday at Larks Park.
