Monarchs fall in WWF quarterfinals

The same team that snapped the Hays Monarchs Legion baseball team’s 10-game win streak ended the Monarchs run in the 2014 Wild West Festival Tournament on Saturday night.
The Monarchs dropped a heartbreaker to the Midwest Bruins, 4-2, despite a solid outing for starter Liam Stults, and outhitting the Bruins 8-6.
The Bruins, the No. 2 seed in the championship bracket, beat the Monarchs 12-1 earlier in the day, then took a 2-0 lead after four innings in Saturday’s late game.
Hays (14-5), the No. 7 seed, scored its first run on a sacrifice fly by Taylor Wasinger in the fifth inning. Braiden Werth scored from third to pull Hays to within 2-1. The Bruins, though, scored in the bottom of the inning to put the game out of reach.
The Monarchs added another run in the sixth on an RBI single by Ricky Hockett, who finished the game 2 for 3. Kameron Schmidt was 2 for 3 as well.
Stults gave up all four runs (one earned) on six hits with three strikeouts and six walks.
The Monarchs are off until Thursday when they travel to Great Bend for a 6 p.m. doubleheader.
The Monarchs saw their 10-game win streak come to an end Saturday morning at Larks Park agains the same Bruins team.
Hays fell 12-1 in pool play Saturday after going 2-0 Friday in games at HHS and TMP Fields.
The Monarchs defeated the Wichita Greys, 2-1, in their tournament opener, then defeated Canon City, Colo., 5-1, in Friday afternoon's game.
In Saturday's loss, the Bruins put up seven runs in the first two innings, then put the game out of reach in the sixth to end the game via the mercy rule. Cameron Brin took the loss in 4.1 innings.
Against the Greys in the opener Friday, Ryan Ruder connected on an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Monarchs the win. Stults, who reached earlier in the inning on a fielder's choice, scored the winning run.
Ruder's hit to left field gave the complete-game win to Hockett. He gave up just one unearned run on four hits. He struck out six and walked five.
The Monarchs led 1-0 after a run in the third inning when Cameron Brin scored from second on a single by Ryan Schippers.
The Greys scored in the top half of the seventh, then Ruder ended the game. Ruder collected two of Hays' six hits, while Jordan Gottschalk finished 2 for 3.
In the afternoon game against Canon City, Schmidt picked up the complete-game victory. He struck out nine and walked two in giving up one earned run on six hits.
Hays jumped out early, putting up four runs through the first two innings. Jordan Gottschalk, Werth and Grant Romme each drove in runs in the three-run first.
Canon City scored its lone run in the first inning before Schmidt settled in.
Schippers and Gottschalk each had two hits, while Werth finished with two RBIs.
Stults also recorded two hits.
Ellis 1-1 in first two games
The Ellis Legion, after falling 6-1 in its first game Friday against Longmont-Erie, Colo., at HHS Field, bounced back for an 8-3 win against the Wichita Canons 17s at TMP Field.
The Railers were scheduled to finish pool play late Saturday against the Next Level Prospects, then wait to see their seed for bracket play.
