VICTORIA — In the back of her mind, Victoria High School senior forward Audra Nowak always had the thought of playing college basketball.

“I was never for sure if I wanted to do it, but as the year went on, I decided that I wanted to,” she said.

In February, Colby Community College assistant coach Kenneth Michaud talked to Nowak. In late February, Nowak went to Colby for a workout.

“I considered it for a long time,” she said.

She decided to play for the Trojans, who went 2-29 (0-14 conference) with an all freshmen roster and a staff that just completed its first year. As well, Nowak was drawn to Colby’s pre-pharmacy program. Nowak had a signing ceremony Wednesday afternoon in the Victoria library.

“I like the coaches, I like the players,” she said.

Nowak and senior point guard Kristin Huser, a Fort Hays State University signee, are longtime friends and the linchpins for two state appearances in the last three years for the Knights.

Before 2011-12, Victoria girls’ basketball hadn’t made state in 20 years. Nowak averaged 12.3 points and 5.6 rebounds combined in her last three winters, including 13.9 points and 5.9 rebounds this year. The 5-foot-9 forward Nowak likely will change to guard for the Trojans.

“At Colby, I probably will be a guard instead of a post,” Nowak said.
