HILLSBORO — The Thomas More Prep-Marian boys’ and girls’ basketball teams each fell in their first game of the Trojan Classic on Monday, hosted by Hillsboro High School.

The TMP boys lost 60-43 to Holcomb (8-2), which is ranked No. 5 in Class 3A. TMP trailed 9-0 before a basket at the 3:56 mark of the first quarter got the Monarchs on the board. Holcomb led 20-9 with 5:52 to play in the half when TMP started to get things going. The Monarchs outscored Holcomb the rest of the half and trailed 29-24 at the break.

Holcomb pulled away in the third quarter, outscoring TMP 17-5. The Longhorns led by as many as 19 points midway through the fourth.

Cameron Fouts led TMP with 10 points, while Kameron Schmidt and Ryan Mayorga each added nine. Heath Tucker carried Holcomb with 22 points, going 10 of 10 from the foul line. As a team, Holcomb was 16 of 17 from the free-throw line, while TMP was 14 of 20.

TMP (4-6) will next play Thursday at 4:30 p.m. against the loser of Hillsboro and Goodland, which play Tuesday at 6 p.m.

The TMP girls fell 55-21 to Wamego, ranked No. 1 in Class 4A Division I. TMP (3-7) was without four key players who were in Washington D.C. with the high school as part of the March for Life.

Wamego held TMP to only six first-half points and were never threatened. University of Nebraska commit Kaylee Page, a 6-foot-2 senior, led the Red Raiders with 17 points, all from the field. Allison Saufert added 15 and Kaylee Page’s sister, 6-foot-3 junior Lanie Page, finished with 12.

TMP was led by a strong second half from freshman Katelyn Zimmerman, who finished with 10 points.

The TMP girls will play again on Friday at 3 p.m. against the loser of Hesston and Goodland.
