By The Hays Daily News
Four Hays High School baseball players were named to the Western Athletic Conference first team, led by WAC player of the year Kade Parker and coach of the year Frank Leo.
Parker, a senior, was a surprising success on the mound for the 13-8 Indians. As the team's No. 2 pitcher to start the season, he went 4-3 with a 0.81 earned run average in eight appearances. He also threw two no-hitters. Parker was also an effective weapon at the plate, hitting .400 with 13 runs (second best on the team) and a team-high 26 hits with five runs batted in.
Hays High's No. 1 pitcher, senior Layne Downing, was also part of the WAC first team. Downing went 3-4 in eight starts with a 1.27 ERA. He hit .267 with 16 hits, eight runs and tied for a team high with 16 RBI.
Sophomores Marcus Altman and Connor Rule rounded out the Indians' first-team selections. Altman was a solid reserve pitcher, going 3-1 in four starts with a 2.86 ERA. He hit .364 with 24 hits, 14 runs and 12 RBI. Altman and Downing tied for the team lead with three home runs each.
Rule, on top of his solid defensive skills, was one of the team's best at-bats across the board. He hit .364 with 24 hits, 12 runs and 16 RBI.
