HHS track cruises to meet win

SALINA -- The Hays High School boys' track and field team cruised to a team title Friday at the Salina Central Invitational.
The Indians won with 151 points, defeating runner-up Salina-Sacred Heart and third-place Manhattan who had 91 and 90 points, respectively. Hays High did it largely due to winning seven events.
The Hays High girls took third with 107.5 points. Salina Central and Manhattan were first and second with 111 and 109, respectively.
Senior Adam Deterding nearly won four event titles on the boys' half of the meet. He won the triple jump (43 feet, 2 inches), high jump (6-4) and 110-meter hurdles (14.53 seconds), but took fourth in the 300-meter hurdles in 42.77 seconds.
Senior Cade Sharp won the shot put and discus with throws of 56-2.75 and 157-3, respectively.
Senior Josh Brungardt finished first in the 800-meter run in 1:58.67, and the 3,200-meter relay, which included Brungardt, Landon Munsch, Ethan Fort and Keith Dryden, won in 8:22.20.
The Hays High girls' took home two event titles, both won by junior Wendy Zimmerman.
Zimmerman took first in the triple jump (35-3.25) and high jump (5-0). She also was second in the 400-meter dash in 1:03.04 and was a member of the third-place 1,600 relay (4:22.75), which also included Annie Gonzales, Summer Smith and Maddie Brungardt.
