'Husky' harvesters ride rails, march on Hutch

1914

It was the 21st consecutive abnormally hot day for Kansas according to the report of the United States weather bureau. The minimum temperature in Topeka was 72 degrees, or nine degrees above the normal minimum.

More than 100 harvesters, most of them young and husky, rode the local freight of the Missouri Pacific into Hutchinson. Upon arrival, the men marched up Main Street and then to the police station. The army of harvesters were under the leadership of "General T. Baumgardner," an oil drifter.

1939

Hutchinson dairymen, meeting informally, agreed almost unanimously to support the "standard" milk ordinance recommended by the state board of health inspectors for the safeguarding of the town's milk supply. The producers were ready to cooperate with Lloyd Cox, the city inspector.

County Attorney Glenn Jones said he would file charges against Abe Miller, 40, identified by victims as the dynamite-bomb invader who robbed the Labette County, Kan. State Bank at Altamount of $477.

1964

Walt Disney's Fantasia was showing at the Fox Theatre. Admission was $1 for adults and 50 cents for children.

Wild weather wiped the sunny smile off of Wednesday's landscape with a salvo of hail, high winds, tornadoes and rain, topped off with a frightening show of strength at Claflin, Kan., where it flattened nine cars of a moving freight train.

1989

Radio Shack was having a "June Jubilee of Savings" sale with Tandy 1000 SL Computers for $699, 100 Watt Digital AM/FM Stereo Receiver for $239 and HQ VHS Video Camcorders for $899.
