WICHITA, Kan. (AP) -- A former Kansas doctor accused of using a gun to partially pay a bondsman who got him out of jail may have a hard time getting a federal judge to free him this time.

Lawrence Simons was due back in U.S. District Court on Wednesday for a formal detention hearing. He was arrested Monday on a federal charge of unlawful possession of a firearm after a felony conviction.

The 57-year-old Wichita man was sentenced in January 2010 to two years in prison followed by three years' probation for unlawfully distributing controlled substances.

He was out on supervised release when he was arrested for making a criminal threat in a domestic case.

Prosecutors allege Simons gave a bonding company a pistol as partial payment on the $2,500 it paid to bail him out.
