HUTCHINSON, Kan. (AP) -- A Reno County magistrate has ordered a Hutchinson woman to pay half the restitution the state sought after she was found guilty of neglecting several horses.

LindaSue Adams was ordered Wednesday to pay $4,500 in restitution for the care of the horses. The state had sought $8,369 to pay Reno County for caring for 13 horses seized from Adams' property, but Reno County Magistrate Judge Randall McEwen said that reasonable efforts were not made to assess the horses' value.

Adams is barred from owning any horses during her 12-month probation and a recent civil injunction will bar her from owning horses again.

"The sad part about this case is the length of time it's taken. We've gotten to the point where nobody is happy ... and I'm not sure I'm going to be able to resolve that," McEwen said.

When the horses were taken from Adams, many were malnourished and needed medical care. Reno County Sheriff's deputies also found three dead horses on her property in April, The Hutchinson News reported (http://bit.ly/1aTFOl8 ).

The restitution hearing had been delayed several times, and it began Wednesday with defense attorney Shannon Crane asking for another continuance. McEwen objected, saying the parties had enough time to prepare.
