SALINA -- A man who jumped off the Broadway Boulevard viaduct Friday morning died from injuries after being taken to Salina Regional Health Center.

Lt. Gerald Shaft, with the Salina Police Department, said a driver saw a man standing on the Broadway viaduct about 11:15 a.m. When the motorist looked back, the man was gone.

Shaft said the driver turned his vehicle around, stopped and saw the man lying on the ground below the bridge with a rope around his neck. Shaft said the rope was too long, stretched or became detached from the bridge and the man hit the dirt road below.

A white shoe, a long rope and blue shirt were found below the bridge, near where the man landed. Police were investigating whether a bag of clothes located nearby was connected to the man.

Lt. Scott Siemsen, with the Salina Police Department, said the man died from his injuries after being taken to Salina Regional Health Center. He said police couldn't release the name of the man late Friday afternoon.
